APPLE SUCKS!!!!!! Read this if you own an iPod and BEWARE!!!
30g ipod video's classic problem with sound.

Many people are having the a problem with the 5th gen ipod video, including myself. Everything is in working order except the sound. Apparently it is a design defect with the logic board. If you open up the ipod, the big chip on the bottom right (where you would be pressing from the front)... ie. the big square chip sitting in the corner is the audio decoder labeled P5021C-TDF. This chip isn't attached properly to the logic board, obviously it works itself loose over time. You get sound when you press firmly on this chip - which is effectively what you are doing if you press on the bottom right corner of the Ipod. I started a case for the defect with Apple. Apple doesn't care about the iPod and does not feel they have to fix it. They have made a few fixes on the board from the 5th gen to the 5.5 gen. They don't support their products and probably never will. It is all done in the private sector. I wouldn't expect them to do anything about the boards or they would have already. They won't sell parts and they won't do anything for repair. Instead they want you to upgrade with a minimum of $130 plus shipping and handling on a refurbished iPod, which the chip can go wrong on AGAIN. I believe that Apple sells the iPod with the expectation that no one will fix them they will throw them away and buy another. They are ripping off their customers left and right and will not recognize this as a manufacturer's defect. I strongly suggest that you do NOT buy iPods. Buy a Zune instead because my older 30g iPod is nothing but a $300 paperweight now. I do however, have a newer iPod touch 8g but I fear that the same will happen to it. Apple maintains that an iPod's lifespan is anywhere from 2-4 years. That averages about $150 a year. Is it worth it? What are your thoughts? Here is the link to the apple forum.

I followed the directions in the forum and pressed on the right-hand corner, but not too hard. The sound returned for the moment that I pressed down until released.

Hi There, first off I am one of the many upset people who finds their relatively new Ipod Video not playing audio any longer through either the headphone jack or the bottom dock connector. If this is you.. try this out:

Pinch the bottom right corner of your Ipod and see if the audio comes back. ** I saw this tip on another forum and it worked like a charm. This obviously shows me this is a manufacturing defect and nothing else.

This problem can be described by the following:

1) Ipod 5th Generation, age of about 6-15 months.

2) Usually starts with heavy static in audio, increasing to nothing but static, fading into silence.

3) It's not the headphones, and it's not the bottom connector.

4) The 5 R's doesn't fix the problem.

5) Starts very suddenly.

6) Seems to be heat related as each morning after cooling off, the Ipod will play audio for about 5 minutes, then start the process all over.

7) Pinching the bottom right corner seems to temporarily fix the problem by fixing the broken solder/connection. OK, my Ipod just left for server (another $30, thanks) and I have read others say that the service people claim nothing is wrong (usually because it takes 5 minutes or so for the problem to surface) and their Ipod is returned to them. I just want Apple to be aware of this problem and offer to fix it, it's not fair to have a product break "under warranty" and still be faced with paying $30 (minimum) to fix it.

Please add to this if you have the same issue.
